Overland Route Map

Journey Perspective

Shehzadi—the Vagabond Couple's 2024 Toyota Tundra—has now covered enough ground to lap the Earth's equator nearly 1.7 times. The fuel bill alone, at a steady 15 mpg from a twin-turbo i-FORCE V6 producing 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, runs to an estimated $11,500 at $4.00 per gallon—not counting the additives required to keep some of the world's more creatively blended gasoline from staging a protest inside the fuel system. That works out to roughly 89 full tanks, or 2,850 gallons of fossilized Cretaceous marine life.

Belgrade: Where Rivers Decide History

Having driven Shehzadi from Croatia and Bosnia into Serbia the day before, crossing the Una and visiting the Jasenovac Memorial along the way, we slept well in Belgrade at the Hotel Villa Bulevar, not too far from the Embassy of The State of Palestine Serbia.

That mattered more than it sounds.

Belgrade to Sofia — Post Summary

From a rested morning in Belgrade, we walk the city at the confluence of the Sava and Danube: Kalenić Green Market, the gold-mosaicked Church of Saint Sava, and the layered ramparts of Kalemegdan Fortress. Then we drive south along the Morava Corridor through Niš, cross into Bulgaria at the busy Gradinje-Kalotina border, and climb into the pine forests above Sofia to rest at Hotel Boeritsa on Vitosha Mountain.

We had a comfortable night's sleep at Zagreb, after our long day crossing in from Venice via Slovenia's Lake Bled and Ljubljana. The morning sun rose, golden light slipping between baroque spires and red-tiled rooftops. It was the kind of morning that practically demands a flaky pastry and strong coffee—which is exactly how we started our day, perched in a café off Tkalčićeva Street. Today was another legend, we overlanded three countries on our beloved Shehzadi (meaning "the Princess") and also paid our respects at profoundly somber memorials at a horrible Yugoslav concentration camp site.

Zagreb to Belgrade — Post Summary

From Zagreb's Old Town, we cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Una river, pause at the confluence town of Kozarska Dubica, then visit the Donja Gradina Memorial Site, the largest execution ground of the Jasenovac concentration camp complex. Crossing back into Croatia near the Stone Flower monument, we continue into Serbia and arrive in Belgrade at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers.
