Overland Route Map

Journey Perspective

Shehzadi—the Vagabond Couple's 2024 Toyota Tundra—has now covered enough ground to lap the Earth's equator nearly 1.7 times. The fuel bill alone, at a steady 15 mpg from a twin-turbo i-FORCE V6 producing 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, runs to an estimated $11,500 at $4.00 per gallon—not counting the additives required to keep some of the world's more creatively blended gasoline from staging a protest inside the fuel system. That works out to roughly 89 full tanks, or 2,850 gallons of fossilized Cretaceous marine life.

Hello traveler! My name is Shehzadi, which means princess—literally, a king’s daughter. I am a Toyota Tundra with a twin-turbo V6 heart wrapped in steel. One June morning in Hyattsville, Maryland, my humans—the ones I call The Vagabond Couple—loaded my bed, patted my dashboard and pointed my grille west.

For almost 9,000 miles, I was their rolling home on a 31-day loop around the United States. My elder brother, Storm Trooper, a desert-bred first-generation Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, had already carried them from Maryland to Banff and Jasper in Canada and back. I eventually closed my own loop in the final homecoming from New Orleans to Hyattsville; this page is the complete 23-episode logbook.

Trans-America Overland 2024 — Series Hub Summary

I carried the Vagabond Couple from Hyattsville, Maryland, west across the Appalachians and Great Plains to the Rockies, Utah canyon country, Nevada and California, then back east through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana and the southern Appalachians. The loop closed just shy of 9,000 miles. This hub gathers all 23 episodes of our 2024 Trans-America drive, plus the route analysis, geology and culture notes, and interactive maps that tie the whole trip together.

Shehzadi (The Vagabond Couple's trusty Toyota Tundra) at her parking spot in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Shehzadi at her parking spot in New Orleans

It was the final morning of our final planned stop. New Orleans had cast its spell on us, as she tends to do, and it was tough peeling ourselves away from the jazz-soaked streets and beignet-laced breezes (see NOLA Deep Dive - a Perfect Day in the Crescent City | New Orleans, Louisiana). But the road was calling. Again. Always.

Shehzadi, our faithful Toyota Tundra, was rested and ready. We gave one last glance to the streetcar gliding past our BNB on St. Charles and Euterpe, loaded up the gear, cranked up the playlist, and pointed our wheels northeast. Ahead was a 1,098-mile familiar home stretch from the Crescent City to our little corner of the world in Hyattsville, Maryland. We had been on most of this route many times over the last 25 years of living in Maryland.

Trans-America Overland Part 23: New Orleans to Hyattsville via Birmingham, Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah Valley — Post Summary

The final episode of our 2024 Trans-America overland loop follows Shehzadi from New Orleans back to Hyattsville, Maryland. We cross Lake Pontchartrain, run through Mississippi and Alabama, stop for boiled peanuts near Birmingham, pass through Chattanooga, Knoxville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Dandridge, then follow the Appalachians through Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley before reaching home. The odometer closes the loop at 8,939 miles.

What's Covered
🌊 Louisiana to Mississippi: Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf Coast — I-10 Twin Span, Gulfport, Biloxi, Hattiesburg
🥜 Alabama: Hot Boiled Peanuts and Birmingham — Trussville fuel stop, roadside peanuts, Birmingham history
⛰️ Tennessee: Chattanooga, the Smokies and Dandridge — Chattanooga, Knoxville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Bojangles

Paddlewheel steamboat NATCHEZ on the Mississippi River in New Orleans
Paddlewheel Steamboat "Natchez" sailing on Mississippi River in New Orleans

We reached New Orleans the previous afternoon (see NOLA Calling - From the Cajun Capital to the Soul of the South: Lafayette to New Orleans via Baton Rouge), parked Shehzadi in a secure paid lot near our BnB, picked up Jazzy Pass fare cards for the city’s public transit, and took a first look at Bourbon Street before calling it a night. Our base was near the corner of St. Charles and Euterpe. This morning the truck could stay put: our last full New Orleans day would run on streetcars, ferry decks and shoe leather.

Mardi Gras beads still hung from neighborhood trees as we stepped outside. They were enough scene-setting on their own; New Orleans did not need a brochure paragraph from us. We were headed first for Canal Street, then across the Mississippi to Algiers Point, back through the French Quarter, and finally into a night of jazz on Bourbon Street.

Trans-America Overland Part 22: New Orleans French Quarter, Algiers Point and Bourbon Street — Post Summary

We spend a full New Orleans day away from Shehzadi, riding the St. Charles streetcar, crossing to Algiers Point, walking the French Quarter, visiting Café du Monde and St. Louis Cathedral, and ending with live jazz and dinner on Bourbon Street.

What's Covered
🚋 St. Charles Streetcar and Canal Street — streetcar ride from Euterpe to Canal Street
⛴️ Canal Street Ferry to Algiers Point — Mississippi ferry crossing
🎷 Algiers Point Levee, Courthouse and Jazz Walk — levee walk, courthouse history and Jazz Walk
☕ French Market, Tujague’s and Café du Monde — Decatur Street, market blocks and café stop
⛪ Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral — cathedral interior and surrounding landmarks
🚢 Mississippi River at the Moonwalk — riverfront and paddlewheel boats

Sing the River on the Mississippi River levee in Baton Rouge.

Part 20 ended in Lafayette after dinner in neighboring Scott, where boudin and gumbo had made a persuasive case for staying put. We resisted. The previous leg had brought us from San Antonio to Lafayette via Houston and Beaumont, and Shehzadi—our Toyota Tundra—was ready for the road east.

The day's route was simple on paper: I-10 to Baton Rouge, a stop beside the Mississippi River, then New Orleans. By evening we expected to trade interstate miles for a St. Charles Avenue streetcar and Bourbon Street jazz. Louisiana had apparently decided one transportation system per day was not ambitious enough.

Trans-America Overland Part 21: Lafayette to New Orleans via Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River — Post Summary

This part takes us from Lafayette to Baton Rouge, where we meet the Mississippi again, walk the levee, see Sing the River and eat rooftop sushi, then continue to New Orleans for our St. Charles Avenue lodging, a streetcar ride to Canal Street, and jazz with jambalaya on Bourbon Street.

What's Covered
🌊 Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River — levee walk, Sing the River and rooftop views
🛣️ Baton Rouge to New Orleans on I-10 — east across southern Louisiana
🚋 St. Charles Avenue Streetcar to the French Quarter — Canal Street arrival
🎷 Bourbon Street Jazz and Jambalaya — live music and dinner
🏠 Home Base on St. Charles Avenue — first New Orleans night
➡️ Next Stop — Algiers Point and the French Quarter in Part 22
