The monument, created by sculptor Vasyl Borodai and erected in 1982, commemorates the 1,500 years anniversary of legendary founding of Kyiv by three brothers - Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv and their sister Lybid. According to the Primary Chronicle, an ancient Slavic manuscript, these siblings were the leaders of a Slavic tribe who, in the 5th century, decided to settle on the hilly banks of the Dnieper River, founding what would become the city of Kyiv. The legend tells that the brothers each settled on a hill, which later became known as the hills of Kyi, Shchek and Khoryv, while their sister Lybid lent her name to the nearby river.

Saint Sophia's Cathedral

Saint Sophia's Cathedral (Софійський собор) in Kyiv is a masterpiece of Eastern Orthodox architecture, revered for its historical significance, stunning design and opulent interior. Built in the 11th century during the reign of Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the cathedral stands as one of the most important and oldest religious structures in Ukraine, reflecting the grandeur of Kyivan Rus and its golden age.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Saint Sophia's Cathedral is not only a religious monument but also a national symbol, representing the cultural and historical continuity of Ukraine. It stands as a testament to the artistic achievements of medieval Kyivan Rus and continues to inspire awe and reverence in all who visit. "Designed to rival Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Kyiv's Saint-Sophia Cathedral symbolizes the 'new Constantinople', capital of the Christian principality of Kyiv, which was created in the 11th century in a region evangelized after the baptism of St Vladimir in 988. The spiritual and intellectual influence of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra contributed to the spread of Orthodox thought and the Orthodox faith in the Russian world from the 17th to the 19th century," says UNESCO.

Saint Sophia, in the context of Saint Sophia's Cathedral in Kyiv, does not refer to an individual saint but to the concept of Holy Wisdom ("Hagia Sophia" in Greek). The term "Sophia" comes from the Greek word for wisdom and "Hagia Sophia" literally translates to "Holy Wisdom."

The cathedral is dedicated to the Holy Wisdom of God, a central theme in Christian theology that represents divine wisdom, which was personified in the Bible, particularly in the books of Proverbs and the Wisdom of Solomon.

This concept was especially significant in Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox Christianity, where several important churches, including the famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, were dedicated to Holy Wisdom rather than a particular saint named Sophia. Therefore, Saint Sophia's Cathedral in Kyiv is a tribute to this divine wisdom, symbolizing the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and understanding.

This combination of fortification and religious dedication reflected the importance of both defense and faith in medieval Kyiv. After centuries of wear, invasions and neglect, the original Golden Gate fell into ruins. It was not until 1982, in celebration of Kyiv's 1,500th anniversary, that a controversial reconstruction of the gate was completed.

Standing at 61 meters (200 feet) tall, the Independence Monument Stella features a tall white marble column topped with a gilded bronze statue of Berehynia, a Slavic goddess and protector, who holds a kalyna (guelder rose) branch - an important symbol of Ukrainian folklore and identity. The column is designed in a classical style, with ornate gold embellishments and rests on a pedestal with intricate bas-reliefs that depict important historical moments in Ukraine’s fight for freedom.
