Arsenalna Metro Station, Kyiv, Ukraine
Arsenalna Metro Station Platform

As promised in our Kyiv, Ukraine post, here is a closer look at Arsenalna (Арсена́льна) Metro Station, a symbol of engineering excellence and historical significance that held the record as the deepest metro station in the world for decades, sitting 105.5 meters (346 feet) below the surface. The station is part of the Kyiv Metro's Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska Line and was opened to the public in 1960. Here is what it feels like to ride a subway train in the deepest bowels of the earth as far as mass transit commuter systems are concerned.

Arsenalna Metro Station — Post Summary

As promised in our main Kyiv post, this is a deep dive (literally) into Arsenalna, the Soviet-era station that held the world depth record for decades: why it was built so far down, how engineers froze the ground to build it, why the escalator ride is split into two stages, and why the platform is still technically higher than the Dnipro River despite being 105.5 meters underground.
