From the Andalucian Coast of Spain to Tanger in Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar — One Tundra, Two Dreamers, and a Whole Lot of “You Drove From Where?!”

🇬🇪➡️🇲🇦 The Vagabond Couple: From the Black Sea to the Strait of Gibraltar — One Tundra, Two Dreamers, and a Whole Lot of “You Drove From Where?!” 🚗🌍
This leg of our trans-continental Asia-Europe-Africa road trip (MAP) continues from us overlanding to Spain from Georgia (see From Greece to Spain (via Italy): Our Grand European Road & Ferry Journey) and takes us from the Andalusian coast to the gates of Africa — with Shehzadi, our trusty Toyota Tundra with Georgian plates (yes, Georgia the country on the Black Sea), handling every curve, checkpoint, and curious stare like a champ.
We rolled out from Mar de Pulpí in Spain and hit the AP-7 motorway, the Autopista del Mediterráneo, winding along one of the most scenic coastal stretches in Europe. This highway’s not just a route — it’s a history lesson on wheels. Past the Roman bones of Cartagena, the palm-lined promenades of Alicante, and the grand Gothic-meets-futurism mix of Valencia, we cruised alongside castles, orange groves, and the glimmer of the Med.

Construction zones popped up like surprise guests. We danced through detours that took us into orange-blossom backroads and roadside cafés that served coffee strong enough to make you rethink your next nap.

Algeciras Ferry Port, Spain |
At Algeciras, we boarded the ferry to cross the legendary Strait of Gibraltar.

This isn’t just a sea crossing — it’s where continents nod at each other. From the ferry deck, we saw the Rock of Gibraltar standing tall and smug, and behind it, ancient legends whispered. The Greeks thought this was the edge of the world — Hercules allegedly split the mountains to open the passage. For us, it was a breezy 90-minute ride with epic views and seagulls that take their job very seriously.

Tanger Med port welcomed us to Africa — and immediately turned into a Q&A session. Customs officers gathered like we were a traveling circus.
“Georgia… the country?”
“You drove all the way?”
“Wait… from the Black Sea??”
Our license plates had the whole port staff buzzing. We might’ve been the first Tundra with Georgian plates to roll into Morocco, and Shehzadi was suddenly a minor celebrity.
After clearing customs and exchanging smiles and stories, we hit the road again — 50 km west to the legendary city of Tangier. We checked into our hotel just outside the medina, hearts full, tires dusty.
Tanger, Morocco |
During checking in, we met a crew of senior motorcyclists — folks in their 60s and 70s, from every corner of the world, living the road life on two wheels. Weathered jackets, bright eyes, and a freedom you could feel. We shared laughs, talked routes, and got reminded that age has nothing on wanderlust.
Tanger, Morocco |
Tangier is no ordinary city. A melting pot of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, it’s been home to spies, poets, traders, and revolutionaries. It has a past you can feel in the walls and a pulse that doesn’t quit.
More roads ahead. Stay with us. 🌎🛣️
